Bangalore
The Garden City :
Bangalore is the capital of southern Indian state of Karnataka. The city has emerged as an important destination for trade, industry, education and tourism in present times. In fact, Bangalore is regarded as the information technology capital of India. Better known as the garden city, Bangalore has many well laid out gardens. Bangalore is one of the few places of India that enjoys pleasant climate throughout the year. Area wise, Bangalore is the seventh largest city of India.
Bangalore in its present form was founded by Kempe Gowda in the early 16th century. Two centuries later, it became an important fortress city under Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. Bangalore still preserves the legacies of the period in the form of a few tourist attractions.
Bangalore is known as the silicon valley of India. The continuously growing IT sector has captivated numerous business houses from all over the world to this garden city.
- By Air - Bangalore International Airport is located on the outskirts of the city. Bangalore has air connectivity with most major destinations of India. International flights also connect Bangalore with countries of the Gulf and South East Asia.
- By Rail - Trains are available to Bangalore from all major destinations of India. Local trains also operate between Bangalore and other places of Karnataka.
- By Road - Bangalore is well linked to the rest of Karnataka and neighbouring states. Inter-State buses are available from the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
- Lal Bagh - Of the many beautiful gardens of Bangalore, Lal Bagh is the most attractive and visited by tourists in large numbers. It derives its name from the red roses which are in full bloom here. Flower shows at periodic intervals of time are also organised in the place.
- Cubbon Park - In the heart of Bangalore city is Cubbon Park named after Lord Cubbon. The large park is regarded as a paradise for morning walkers and children. There are many old buildings in the area known for their impressive architecture.
- The Bull Temple - The biggest attraction of this temple is a life -size image of Nandi bull which is 4.57 metres high and 6.10 metres long. The temple was built by Kempegowda in the 16th century. The image has been carved out of single granite rock. Non Hindus are not allowed to enter the temple premises.
- Vidhan Soudha - The state assembly complex building is regarded as a nice fusion of Dravidian style of architecture and modern influences. Special permission may also be secured to watch the assembly proceedings.
- Tipu's Palace - The summer palace of Tipu Sultan built in Bangalore is another attraction of the city. This double storeyed ornate structure was built using teak wood. The palace is beautifully decorated with floral motifs on the walls and ceilings. Magnificent pillars, arches and balconies also adorn the palace. However, most part of the fort built by Tipu Sultan near the palace is now in ruins.
- Ulsoor Lake - The 1.5 sq. km lake is dotted with islands. Located on the north-eastern fringes of the city, the lake is an ideal place for boating and shopping. A Ganesh festival is also organised in the place in the month of August.
Bangalore has some of the best shopping malls and showrooms in India. Sandalwood, silk and hand woven materials are in great demand in Bangalore. The magnificent brasswork of Karnataka's artisans are also found in abundance in the markets of Bangalore. Ivory artifacts and the Lambani jewellery of the place are also liked as gift items.
The main shopping areas of Bangalore city are Mahatma Gandhi Road, Commercial Street, Brigade Road, Public Utility Building, Kempe Gowda Road, Jayachamarajendra Road, Jayanagar Shopping Complex, Russel Market, City Market and Avenue Road.
